Iran is behind the a series of threatening emails sent to Democratic voters in 4 states this past week that some in the media reported as being from right-wing groups. That according to a Washington Post report this evening and a press conference given by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe.
One of the emails said “You are currently registered as a Democrat and we know this because we have gained access into the entire voting infrastructure. You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you. Change your party affiliation to Republican to let us know you received our message and will comply.”
Democrats in Florida, Alaska, Pennsylvania, and Arizona may have received the messages, beginning Tuesday morning. In one Florida country, election officials said hundreds, if not thousands, of voters received the emails
Some of the emails were made to look like they were sent by a far-right group.
However, authorities have now concluded that they were sent by Iranian groups using publicly available voter information, and were designed to create the appearance of an election breach to undermine confidence in the integrity of the upcoming election. Metadata gathered from dozens of the emails pointed to the use of servers in Saudi Arabia, Estonia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates, according to analysts interviewed by the Washington Post.
“It’s clearly organized and very much planned,” Rita Katz, director of SITE Intelligence Group, told the Washington Post.
The disinformation appears designed to stoke fears of voter intimidation by Trump supporters. The right-wing group named in the emails was mentioned during the first presidential debate when the president was asked to denounce them. Facebook has banned them as a hate group, so I have purposely avoided saying their name for fear of censorship. The group has denied involvement.
Media outlets reporting on the threatening emails this week often said they were meant to intimidate or frighten Democratic voters. But news that Iran is behind them now suggests a different motive, given that country’s ongoing battle against President Trump, who has confronted Iran more forcefully than his predecessors.
The Federalist tonight is reporting that a senior intelligence official says the Iranian campaign was “designed to help Biden”: “Media did exactly what Iran knew they would do. They assumed fake [right-wing] e-mails were real, then used them to attack Trump.”
Before the revelation that Iran was behind the emails, numerous outlets, including The Hill and CNN, mentioned the name of the right wing group and said it supported President Trump. CNN even said the group was “embraced by” the president.
Christopher C. Krebs, director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said the emails are meant to “undermine American voters’ confidence in our elections.”
Stock futures fell on the news.
