I found a painted beer barrel outside the Town Hall in Burton. Next door is St Pauls church. The door was open so I went inside. I crept around trying not to disturb the person sat at the back who was fiddling with his smartphone.
This huge church next to the Town Hall, is a family-friendly church with a warm welcome. We are in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England, and the 9-30 Sunday Mass is celebrated with traditional ritual and music to engage all the senses. Preaching links Holy Scripture and theology to human life in the 21st century.
The 123' tower is one of the tallest buildings in the town, and clearly visible to travellers on the A38 and the railway. Burton, in Staffordshire, is Britain's brewing capital, and legend has it that the first Lord Burton of the Bass brewing family, who built St Paul's, hoped the church would become a cathedral when Burton was made a city. It didn't happen.
Saturday morning and the sun is out. Plenty to do today.
